Maui Family Trip:
Snorkeling, Sea Turtles & Island Magic
Ocean views aren’t exactly rare for Californians — we live with the Pacific at our doorstep. But when it comes to actually getting in the water, Maui is on another level.
The ocean in California is often too cold and not always clear, with some level of pollution commonly found along beaches. In Maui, the water was warm, calm, and unbelievably blue. Both kids agreed: their favorite part of the entire trip was snorkeling in Maui and swimming alongside tropical fish and sea turtles.
This trip felt a little rushed, and there were still a few snorkeling spots Dad had researched that we didn’t get to visit. But that just gives us a reason to come back.
If you're planning a Maui family vacation, here is how we structured our 5-day itinerary to balance snorkeling, scenic drives, and relaxation.
Our 5-Day Maui Family Itinerary Overview
- Day 1: Arrival in Maui & Ka’anapali Beach
- Day 2: Maui Ocean Center & South Maui Snorkeling
- Day 3: Road to Hana
- Day 4: Haleakalā Sunset & Stargazing
- Day 5: Snorkeling at Palauea Beach
Road to Hana & Haleakalā Sunset

First, we checked off the classic Maui bucket list experiences.
We drove the legendary Road to Hana, winding through its endless curves. The little one even got carsick on those dramatic turns!
After a few hours, we made it up to nearly 10,000 feet above sea level at Haleakalā National Park for sunset. Watching the sun sink below a sea of clouds, followed by a sky bursting with stars — with zero light pollution — was unforgettable. The night sky truly felt infinite, an experience that simply isn't possible in some places.
Palauea Beach
We also visited the Maui Ocean Center, where one of our most magical moments happened underwater.
During our visit, we were incredibly lucky to swim alongside a sea turtle for a short stretch. The underwater world in Maui truly feels like another universe, showcasing colorful fish darting through coral, sunlight filtering through crystal-clear water, and a sense of calm that only the ocean can provide.
Dad captured the perfect photo at just the right moment. We probably could have gotten a little closer to the turtle, but I was slightly worried it might bite me!
Our older one has become quite confident with snorkeling and spotted fish in every color imaginable, along with more sea turtles.
The younger one practiced in the hotel pool for half a day before the trip, determined to be brave. But once we reached the open ocean, he hesitated. Slowly, gently, with plenty of encouragement (and a bit of negotiation), he finally went in. And once he did, he loved it! Soaking in the gifts of the ocean, we felt calm and joyful, and we'll definitely be going back for more!
During this trip, we realized (perhaps not for the first time) that sometimes travel isn’t just about checking destinations off a list. It’s about helping kids build courage and adventurous spirit, one small wave at a time.
