From Los Angeles to Paris: Starting Our European Alps Ski Road Trip

We kicked off our European Alps road trip by flying from Los Angeles to Paris. It was our very first ski trip in Europe, everything was manageable… except for the jet lag.

No one warned us how brutal that would be. For days, both kids were wide awake at 4 or 5 a.m., completely done with sleeping. By 7:30 in the morning, it was still pitch black outside. Shops were closed. Ski lifts wouldn’t open until 9:30. Breakfast was long finished. And there we were… wondering what to do while we waited.

Honestly, if it weren’t for our deep love for big snowy mountains, dragging kids out to ski — especially in stormy weather — can sometimes feel like paying money to suffer.

We made a quick stop in Geneva. We also spent a couple of hours at CERN, where the kids had fun exploring the interactive exhibits.

Christmas in Chamonix

Christmas skiing in Chamonix with view of Mont Blanc

Chamonix, France, home to Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps.

Our first ski stop was Chamonix.

The snow was deep. Too deep. Light and soft, but unforgiving. One wrong turn and you were swallowed. First, both kids sank in and burst into tears. I yelled at them to calm down and stay still. Minutes later, I found myself stuck in the same powder trap, completely unable to get out. I owed them an apology.

When you fall on normal snow, you can push your hands against the ground to lift yourself up. In deep powder? There’s no leverage. And with skis buried under the snow, pulling your boots down — you’re basically helpless.

Thankfully, the next day the sky cleared.

Christmas morning in Chamonix felt peaceful and magical. When the clouds lifted and Mont Blanc finally revealed itself, all the struggles from the previous stormy days suddenly felt worth it.

Skiing down from the clouds to the valley floor left my legs completely numb. But with the majestic sunset glowing behind the mountains, I had no complaints.

Zermatt & The Matterhorn

Next stop: Zermatt, the Swiss ski village famous for the iconic triangular peak of the Matterhorn.

We took the mountain trains up each day to ski. There’s even a late train around 8 p.m. that lets you see the snow-covered peaks under the stars. We lasted about thirty freezing minutes, but it was completely worth it.

One thing we noticed while skiing was that everyone was charging downhill. They sped down as quickly and efficiently as possible, seeming to be in a rush. It didn’t quite match my dream of leisurely skiing down the mountain while soaking in the scenery.

We then took a glacier train to visit an ice cave, and even the journey there was stunning — snowy valleys, dramatic peaks, postcard-level views everywhere.

Milan Break

Milan Break Lake Como

After days of skiing, we took a break and drove to Milan and its surrounding areas.

The holiday atmosphere in Milan was festive and lively — maybe too lively. Every corner of the city was crowded. Luckily, once we left the urban area, everything became calm and quiet. We discovered small villages nestled between mountains and water, smoke rising gently from chimneys, and noticeably lower prices compared to the city center. Lake Como is my favorite; it's peaceful, elegant, and far less crowded than Milan during the holidays.

Often, the quiet corners leave a deeper impression than the famous landmarks.

St. Moritz — Worth the Hype?

St. Moritz Worth the Hype ski with kids

Our first slopes of the new year — and the third and final resort of this trip — St. Moritz.

Online, it’s marketed as a luxury Swiss ski destination, host of two Winter Olympics, and visited by countless celebrities.

My honest opinion? The marketing team deserves a raise.

For me, it felt overrated and overpriced.

The snow quality was average at best. Some areas had exposed dirt; other parts were icy and hard. Of course, ski resorts depend heavily on snow conditions and weather patterns, so possibly we were just unlucky.

There is a frozen lake at the base of the mountain, and the kids loved playing on it, but many other ski towns have alpine lakes, so I wasn’t particularly blown away.

The town itself does have several historic five-star hotels and endless luxury boutiques. The challenge is that too many regular people like me come chasing that “luxury” vibe, making the town surprisingly busy and loud.

In my imagination, though, I edited the scene: remove the taxis, rental cars, and tired tourists. Keep only elegant women in fur coats carrying designer shopping bags, middle-aged men with cigars, and an occasional horse carriage passing by. Suddenly, the old-money glamour makes sense. Regardless, I’m happy I can now check “Swiss skiing” off my bucket list.

Paris, Beginning and Ending the Journey

Paris as the Beginning and Ending the Alps Journey

On the way back to Paris, we stopped in Zurich and visited the Lindt Home of Chocolate.

As expected, the winter was cold, but when the sun came out, a quick city walk along the Seine was peaceful and calming. When it rained or got too chilly, we would duck into one of the countless museums lining the streets.

There are masterpieces everywhere. Our daughter could wander for hours with an audio guide. Our son? Not yet. Maybe in a few years.

One funny moment — my daughter noticed how carefully French people dress. She informed me that next time we visit Paris, we must wear classic wool coats in neutral colors. No more bright ski jackets for city strolling.

I guess I won’t be packing so casually next time.

Final Thoughts

Our first European ski road trip was chaotic, humbling, and unforgettable.

On final reflection, we learned a very important lesson: that skiing depends heavily on the weather. Even better, we also learned another that could prove infinitely more valuable: that sometimes the best memories come from the hardest days.

FAQ: European Alps Ski Trip with Kids

Is December a good time to ski in the Alps?

If you’re planning a European Alps ski trip in December, be prepared for short daylight hours, cold temperatures, and the possibility of variable snow quality. Early-season storms can bring excellent powder, but warmer weeks may leave slopes icy or thin in some areas.

On the bright side, Christmas decorations, festive markets, and fewer peak-season crowds (outside Christmas week) can make the experience feel magical. In short, skiing in the Alps in December is absolutely worth it — as long as you keep expectations flexible and let the mountains decide.

Which Alps ski resort is best for families?

Out of the three resorts we visited — Chamonix, Zermatt, and St. Moritz — we would choose Chamonix for a future family ski trip. It felt more affordable overall, and during our visit the snow conditions were better. The town also had a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that worked well for traveling with kids.

That said, each resort offers something different, so the best choice depends on your family’s skiing level, budget, and travel style.

Is St. Moritz worth visiting?

St. Moritz is worth visiting if you’re curious about its historic luxury reputation and glamorous alpine setting. The town has iconic hotels, designer boutiques, and a beautiful frozen lake in winter.

However, if your main goal is snow quality and value for money, expectations should be realistic. Like all ski destinations, conditions vary year by year. Whether it’s “worth it” ultimately depends on what you’re looking for — luxury atmosphere, skiing performance, or a balanced family experience.
