London with Kids: Buckingham Palace & British Museum

UK road trip

Like many first-time visitors, we checked off London’s greatest hits — Buckingham Palace, the Changing of the Guard, and the British Museum.

Before departure, news outlets and social media had been reporting unrest in the UK, calling it the worst in 13 years. There were even warnings about phone snatchers on motorcycles. I’ll admit, for the first few days, I held my phone like it was made of diamonds. But guess what? We saw no riots. No theft. No chaos. Just tourists and locals going about their days. Another reminder that media headlines often amplify fear far beyond reality.

Still, as someone who prefers a slower pace, I’ve never been a big-city person. London was impressive, but I was already looking forward to the countryside.

At the British Museum, our younger son got impatient. We’ll definitely return one day when the kids are older.

Paris Olympics Visit, A 2-Day Side Trip from London

Paris Olympic

We took the Eurostar from St Pancras to Paris for a short stay. Paris had just hosted the 2024 Olympic Games, and we wanted to see the city in its Olympic edition. Even though it was just a quick visit, it was absolutely worth it.

We went to see the limited Olympic installations around the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe. Many Olympic structures were still up, even though we had gotten there too late, likely set to stay through the Paralympics.

One evening, we took a Seine River dinner cruise that followed the Olympic Opening Ceremony route. As the boat passed under the bridges, we waved at people on shore like athletes in a parade.

Quick note: We wondered whether this was related to Europe’s ongoing energy situation, as many places in Paris did not have air conditioning. It was hot. Very hot.

After visiting the Louvre, we returned to London via Eurostar and began the next chapter of our trip. The Louvre is another place I would love to revisit when the kids are older, or maybe on a parents-only trip. :)

Driving Through England & Scotland

UK road trip with kids in the countryside

We picked up our rental car near St Pancras and began our road trip north, including Cambridge, Newcastle, Gateshead, Hamilton (Scotland), Manchester, Oxford, and eventually Windsor.

Driving in the UK is not easy. The roads are made of a terrifying mix of left-side driving, narrow roads, endless roundabouts, and one-way streets. Dad handled all of it shockingly well.

But once we left London, everything slowed down in the best way possible. The countryside scenery is simply unbeatable. Rolling green fields, historic towns, stone villages. You could stop every minute for a photo.

The weather was lovely. After the previous week’s heat wave, temperatures settled into the low 20s°C during the day and low teens at night, making a pleasant light-jacket type of weather, which was very comfortable.

Castles, Estates, and Hidden Gems

We visited Windsor Castle before heading back to Heathrow for our return flight to Los Angeles. Some of our favorite moments weren’t at the famous sites — they were at lesser-known estates in the countryside, where there were barely any tourists, for example,

  • Burghley House, built by Queen Elizabeth I’s Lord High Treasurer and lived in by 16 generations of his descendants.
  • Lowther Castle, once the grand home of an Earl. It later served as an infantry camp during World War I and even became farmland before opening to the public in recent years.

Lowther, in particular, had a haunting beauty. The partially ruined structures carried a raw sense of history that you don’t always feel in perfectly preserved royal castles. There was something powerful about seeing grandeur fade with time.

One short trip is simply not enough to see it all.

Food and Stay: Honest Thoughts

The food was surprisingly good!

In our experience, the ingredients tasted fresh and less processed compared to what we are used to in the U.S. Ingredients tasted clean and real — milk tasted like milk, meat tasted like meat. The preparation felt more refined and less heavy than typical American fare.

The accomodation was not our favorite.

Whether in cities or the countryside, many hotels felt old and worn. You could almost smell the history in the rooms… and not always in a charming way.
